Behind The Catch
Every print in this collection starts as a real, photographed viola — not an illustration. Small and heart-shaped, this flower has carried quiet, personal meaning across cultures for over two thousand years.
Ancient Greece
The Greeks called their capital ‘the violet-crowned city’ — a name the poet Pindar gave Athens for the wild violets said to ring its hills. The flower carried real medicine too
Medieval Europe
In medieval herbals, Viola tricolor — the wild pansy — was known as ‘Herba Trinitatis,’ the Herb of the Trinity, its three colors read as a symbol of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The flower was also tied to the Virgin Mary, its humble, low-growing habit taken as an emblem of her humility.
Elizabethan England
By Shakespeare’s time, the same wild pansy had a new name and a new story
Victorian England
The Victorians built an entire vocabulary around flowers, and viola held one of its steadiest meanings
Napoleonic France
In 19th-century France, the violet became a personal emblem. Napoleon wore one at his wedding to Josephine, promised his supporters he’d ‘return with the violets’ from exile on Elba, and the flower became a secret sign of loyalty among Bonapartists after his fall — worn or exchanged as a quiet, coded pledge of allegiance.
