The Flower

Viola cornuta 'Sorbet Morpho' is a real cultivar in the Sorbet series, bred for a striking pairing: deep electric purple petals deepening toward a whiskered gold center. It grows in compact mounds and blooms through an unusually long cool season. The name is a nod to the Morpho butterfly, whose famous blue isn't pigment at all — it's light bent by the microscopic structure of its wing scales. Sorbet Morpho gets its color the ordinary way, through pigment, but the effect lands just as striking.

Viola cornuta descends from wild viola species native to the Pyrenees, the mountain range between France and Spain — the same wild lineage that eventually gave rise to the garden pansies and violas grown across Europe today.

A Flower With a Long Memory

The wider viola family carries centuries of meaning. In Victorian England's "language of flowers," pansies and violas stood for thoughtful remembrance — the word "pansy" itself comes from the French pensée, meaning "thought." Shakespeare wrote a wild viola into A Midsummer Night's Dream as "love-in-idleness," the flower whose juice becomes a love potion. Later, Art Nouveau designers like Tiffany and Lalique used the viola's heart-shaped petals as a recurring motif in glasswork and jewelry. It's a flower that has been noticed, and given meaning, for a very long time.
