Sorbet Delft Blue: From Wild Viola to Wearable Art

Catch The Nature exists on one idea: that nature is the best artist alive. Every print in our collection starts as a real, photographed flower — never illustrated, never invented. Sorbet Delft Blue is one of those flowers.

The Flower

Viola cornuta, also called the horned violet, blooms in indigo and white — small, heart-shaped petals gathered around a delicate whiskered face. It has been cultivated since the 1770s for its long bloom season and cool-toned color range, and Sorbet Delft Blue is a specific cultivar within that lineage, bred to a bicolor precise enough to have earned a Fleuroselect Gold Medal. Like all Viola cornuta, it descends from wild viola species native to the Pyrenees, the mountain range between France and Spain.

Why 'Delft Blue'

The name isn't a stretch. The bloom's indigo-on-white contrast reads like hand-painted Delft pottery — the blue-and-white tin-glazed earthenware that originated in the Dutch city of Delft in the 17th century, itself inspired by imported Chinese porcelain. It became one of the most recognizable traditions in Dutch decorative art, and centuries later, a small flower happens to echo the same palette. Violas carrying this indigo-and-white contrast have long been prized by collectors for exactly that reason — a quiet, precise bicolor that reads as considered rather than accidental.

From Bloom to Fabric

The process is the same every time: we photograph the real bloom, then take the colors it actually grew and shape them into a new pattern designed for the garment — never inventing a color it didn't have, only carrying its real color story forward. The image below traces that exact path for Sorbet Delft Blue, from the photographed flower through pattern development to the finished print.
